The Criteria for Awarding Honorary Designation

by admin

All candidates who apply for Honorary Doctorate (honoris causa) are processed via a process called RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning).

The RPL process involves the submission of a profile of evidence for certification by a professional committee, based on the work experience, skills and competencies.

Prior learning is acquired in different ways and can be broken into the following categories:

1) Formal learning
Certificates, diplomas and degrees earned at universities or colleges through formal system of education.

2) Non- formal learning
Knowledge and skills acquired outside formal system of education, such as training activities, voluntary services, professional development and awards.

3) Informal learning
The Learning outcomes of life and work experience, such as work reports and articles, seminars and quest speakers, attending trade shows, social events, log books, statement of duties and references.

An Honorary Doctorate (honoris causa) is conferred as a way of honoring individuals for their outstanding contribution to a specific field through the certification of RPL. The recipient of an honorary doctorate may use it on the curriculum vitae but list it under awards and honors and not under the section for qualifications.

Whenever the title “Dr.” is used in the case of an honorary doctorate, the abbreviations “h.c.” (honoris causa) should be used to avoid misleading the general public and to preserve the integrity of earned degrees. It should be noted that the honorary doctorate awarded by CCIIE is an honorary designation under the degree of membership in the official capacity approved by the board of directors.

The specific use of the title “Dr.” may vary depending on the country and jurisdiction, and individuals should consult the relevant authorities or professional organization for specific guidance.
